Trout Fishing
17.4 lb brown trout, new state record, was landed from Lower Mountain Fork. Trout are stocked year round about twice per month.  The “Evening Hole” has been refurbished with grants and funding from the Lower Mountain Fork River Foundation and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. This is an exciting project designed as an excellent year round trout habitat. Winter is an excellent time for fly fishing in Oklahoma. Please review the Oklahoma fishing regulations for this section of the Lower Mountain Fork River. Anglers are asked to use only artificial lures with barbless hooks and may harvest only one rainbow trout and one brown trout 20-inches or longer per day.

Broken Bow Lake, built in 1969 features 754 sq. miles of watershed and 180 miles of shoreline. 1,368,800 acre-feet of water offers plenty of coves and clean water for major fishing, boating and skiing

Talimena National Scenic Byway
Explore the 54 miles across the very top of the Ouachita Mountains in Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas offering spectacular views and scenic beauty. More trails than you can do! From 1-mile easy to 12 mile challenging. Challenging hills. Scenic vistas. The Beaver Trail at Beavers Bend is one of the nicest 2-mile trails adjacent to the Mountain Fork River, with two bridge crossings. Annual 5 km Dogwood Days race. Last Saturday in March. Idabel Chamber of Commerce. See Dogwood Days.   Annual 5 km Larry Thompson Memorial Race. Third Saturday in June during Owa-Chito Festival.

Bicycling
Plenty of challenging hills for road bikes. Talimena Scenic Drive is Dolomites quality riding. Easy bike riding in the Beaver's Bend State Park. Join the McCurtain County Cycling Association on group rides. Visitors always welcome.

 Mountain Biking
NEW off-road mountain bike trails at the Lakeview Lodge with scenic views of the lake. Minutes away from Hochatown.   We're working on building additional paths in the area . Call to ask about group rides. All skill levels welcome. Also see ATV below.

 ATV 4-Wheeling & Dirt Bikes
New Rules.

Free access on Ouachita National Forest. Land Access Pass required for Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area. Many, many miles of well-maintained roads to ride for ATV or dirt bikes. NO ATV riding inside PMC. You can trailer your ATVs and we have plenty of parking and turn-around space.

Red Slough

Gardner Mansion
Built in 1884 at the end of the Trail of Tears. It was the home of the Choctaw Chief, Jefferson Gardner. Open 7 days/week by the Stiles family.

Wheelock Missionary & Academy
Listed on the 11 Most Endangered Places by the National Historic Trust & Preservation. Built in the 1800s as a mission and school for indians.

Beavers Bend State Park

 Beavers Bend is one of the most popular parks in the region; it is located in southeastern Oklahoma off US-259. The park's main entrance is seven miles north of Broken Bow on US-259A.

The Beavers Bend Nature Center
Bird watching is excellent year round. Injured birds and other animals are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Bald Eagles migrate from the north and roost on the spectacular cliffs along the riverbank from Nov-Mar. Saturday mornings at 9:00 am join Eagle Watching at the Nature Center. Beavers Bend Naturalist, Frank Griffith leads story-telling, nature hikes and crafts. 580-494-6556.

Beavers Bend Restaurant & Country Store
Grilled trout, hamburger baskets and fried catfish are particularly good eats. You’ll not find a more scenic restaurant. Seat yourself (shoes barely required) on the upper deck surrounded by tree tops and the flowing Mountain Fork River below. They also have general store supplies and food. 580-494-6551

The Beavers Bend Depot
The Beavers Bend Depot operates an authentic 1/3 size replica of the C.P. Huntington S. P. steam engine train from 1863. Bring your camera as you will most likely encounter deer, turkey and other wildlife on the 15-20 minute ride through the Beaver’s Bend Resort Park Game Preserve. Children and adults alike will enjoy the train ride through Beavers Bend. Every Saturday in October is the "Train of Terror."

Horseback Riding & Equestrian Trails
The Depot also has tame horseback riding. The ride is 2.5 miles through the Game Preserve and takes about an hour. Reservations recommended on busy weekends.

Beavers Bend Paddle Boats and swim beach

Hiking Trails & Running
The Beaver Lodge Trail is one of the nicest parallel to the Mountain Fork River, covered with shady tree canopy with two bridge crossings. Fun for kids. One mile out and back.
Other trails in Beavers Bend Park up to the connecting David Boren trail of 12.5 miles (one way).
